How Pipelines Operate

The American Petroleum Institute and the Association of Oil Pipe Lines have teamed up to create an excellent website called “Pipeline 101”.  This web site provides a good overview of the pipeline industry, how pipelines operate, what some of the challenges and benefits are and why pipelines are so vital to the energy infrastructure of the United States. Please visit this site for detailed explanations, graphics, and insights on how pipelines operate.

Operations Control Center

A key aspect of how Wolverine’s pipelines operate safely is Wolverine’s Operations Control Center. Wolverine monitors our pipelines from a control center that is manned 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 52 weeks a year. We also have an off-site back-up control center for contingency purposes. The Operations Control Center monitors everything from the flow rate, to pipeline pressure, to the opening and closing of valves. The Controller on duty is alerted to changes in the pipeline, which allows him to respond quickly.  Data is continuously received from our pipeline stations located along the pipeline for real time monitoring.  The following link is to an industry video that provides a general summary of Pipeline Control Rooms.
